After tourist gets trapped in Waterstones, Airbnb teams up to offer a night’s stay in Piccadilly store

first_img Gabriella Griffith whatsapp Share When the story of David Willis, the man who was stuck in a Waterstones store at night, emerged last week, team Airbnb smelled an opportunity. Why not offer a night’s stay in the store? Luckily Waterstones’ retail director Rik McShane agreed. “Amidst the story were a great many messages from people exclaiming how much they would like to spend the night with the books they love. “So, when Airbnb got in touch we leapt at the chance to give them what they asked for, with the promise that we’d let them out first thing in the morning.” he said. For one night only, this Friday, 10 people will spend a night at Waterstones, Piccadilly. Airbnb has already offered a night at an IKEA store in Australia. Where next? Markets keep their cool as Federal Reserve ends quantitative easing

first_imgWednesday 29 October 2014 2:01 pm Tags: Federal Reserve Quantitative easing Guy Bentley Show Comments ▼ whatsapp Markets keep their cool as Federal Reserve ends quantitative easing Sharecenter_img The Federal Reserve has announced the end of its monthly $15bn bond-buying programme, adding that its intention is to maintain low interest rates for “considerable time”.The Fed was more bullish on the state of the US labour market, and all its members with the exception of one voted to draw quantitative easing (QE) to a close. Minneapolis Fed President Narayana Kocherlakota said:Keeping the current target range for the federal funds rate at least until the one-to-two-year ahead inflation outlook has returned to 2 percent and should continue the asset purchase program at its current level. Before the Fed’s statement, analysts at French bank Société Générale said:It should be a non-event, and you wouldn’t rule out another rise in equity indices around the world given the recent momentum. The former head of the Fed Alan Greenspan took a radically different view. Speaking hours before the announcement, Greenspan warned that the end of QE could wreak havoc in global markets. As recently as two weeks ago FOMC member James Bullard said the Fed should consider delaying the end of its QE programme, which led an upswing in global markets after a tough set of losses in October. The health of the US labour market is still in question despite falling unemployment. Strangely enough, figures out yesterday showed US consumer confidence rose to its highest in seven years in October, but retail and durable goods sales have continued to disappointBullard argued that the strong US dollar could cause the US central bank to miss its inflation target, but there could have been another reason for the timing of his remarks.Commenting this morning, Michael Hewson of CMC markets, said; The timing of the intervention spoke to a larger truth, and that was the stock market plunge protection team were still looking at keeping asset prices high.Despite Bullard’s warnings, US markets dropped only slightly on the news, with the Dow falling 0.36 per cent and the Nasdaq dropping 0.78 per cent, while the dollar fell  0.09 per cent against the euro. by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May LikeMisterStoryWoman Files For Divorce After Seeing This Photo – Can You See Why?MisterStoryzenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comYahoo! Tata Steel targets construction market with new lighter product

first_img Share whatsapp whatsapp Tata Steel targets construction market with new lighter product Show Comments ▼ Tags: NULL Wednesday 4 February 2015 7:55 pmcenter_img TATA Steel yesterday launched its “new super” steel, Celsius 420, designed to be 17 per cent lighter than conventional steel and aimed primarily at the construction industry. The decrease in weight will allow constructors to use smaller foundations and save on costs and time by requiring fewer temporary structures, in addition, the new steel is far easier to weld. The new steel, which is currently undergoing customer trials, is made in strip at Tata’s mills in south Wales before being fashioned into hot-finished tubes at the company’s Hartlepool and Corby mills. Henrik Adam, Tata Steel’s chief commercial officer in Europe, said: “In Celsius 420 we’re bringing to market an entirely new range of hot-finished hollow structural sections that we think is in a class of its own.The new Celsius 420 range of circular, square, rectangular and elliptical hollow sections entered production late last year and is currently undergoing customer trials. The company, Europe’s second-largest steelmaker, entered talks last year to sell some of its largest steelmaking operations in Britain, including its long products division, to Geneva-based Klesch Group.Shares in the company gained 2.13 per cent on the product announcement. Here’s what a year in the life of earth’s CO2 looks like

first_img Share Here’s what a year in the life of earth’s CO2 looks like It’s obvious to suggest the world’s carbon dioxide emissions change with the seasons – but what does that look like? The Cartography and Geovisualisation Group at Oregon State University and NASA has crunched one year’s worth of data to show us how carbon dioxide swirls around the atmosphere over the course of four seasons.  The interactive video map is part of a simulation called “Nature Run”, which uses data on atmospheric conditions and the emission of greenhouse gases. The model is then is left to run on its own and simulate the natural behaviour of the earth’s atmosphere.”While the presence of carbon dioxide has dramatic global consequences, it’s fascinating to see how local emission sources and weather systems produce gradients of its concentration on a very regional scale,” Bill Putman, a scientist at NASA, said.”Simulations like this, combined with data from observations, will help improve our understanding of both human emissions of carbon dioxide and natural fluxes across the globe.”Here are a couple of screenshots – you can watch the full visualisation here.(Source: Carto Group and NASA)The visualisation shows high concentrations of CO2 emissions are mainly found in the Northern hemisphere. What’s more they cluster around major regions – such as North America, Europe and Asia. You can also see how big weather patterns – such as the climate signal El Niño which comes about just two or three times in a decade – push the plumes of pollution around the earth’s atmosphere.(Source: Carto Group and NASA)But during the milder seasons of spring and summer, more green plants absorb CO2 through photosynthesis, removing it from the atmosphere. This can be seen in the visualisation by a reduction of red and purple tones. At the same time, it starts to get slightly colder in the southern hemisphere, leading more people to light fires in Africa, South America and Australia. This pushes carbon monoxide – another pollutant – into the earth’s atmosphere, which is demonstrated by the grey shades which have emerged on the map. by Taboolaby TaboolaSponsored LinksSponsored LinksPromoted LinksPromoted LinksYou May Likezenherald.comMeghan Markle Changed This Major Detail On Archies Birth Certificatezenherald.comMaternity WeekA Letter From The Devil Written By A Possessed Nun In 1676 Has Been TranslatedMaternity WeekPost FunKate & Meghan Are Very Different Mothers, These Photos Prove ItPost FunEquity MirrorThey Drained Niagara Falls — They Weren’t Prepared For This Sickening DiscoveryEquity MirrorPast Factory4 Sisters Take The Same Picture For 40 Years. And city economists were left surprised, with many expected a rise of 0.4 per cent. “It had seemed likely that Easter being right at the start of April would lift sales in March,” Howard Archer, chief economist at IHS, said.Economists are keenly awaiting the release of figures  first quarter gross domestic product next Tuesday, However city economists are now looking to the release of first quarter gross domestic product next Tuesday, with many expected growth to have slowed from the previous quarter.”Concern that gross domestic product growth could have slowed appreciably in the first quarter of 2015 has been fuelled by disappointing industrial production … construction output data for February as well as weaker trade data,” Archer said. The capital is more than just our financial centre, it’s a symbol for the entire country. It’s no good setting our sights on housing targets if we’re just going to run into the brick wall of planning applications before so much as a trowel leaves the toolbox,” said Andrew Bridges, managing director of estate agents Stirling Ackroyd.House prices rose 9.6 per cent year-on-year in March across the UK, according to official figures. Data released today by the Council for Mortgage Lenders show housing market activity slowing around the General Election, with mortgage lending down four per cent year-on-year in April. But lenders said they expect lending to pick up on the back of extremely competitive mortgage rates.
