Speakers on the night will be George Lekakis, Tasneem Chopra and Nyadol Nyuon. These are all people who have achieved great things in their communities or who have shown significant resilience in the face of insurmountable challenges. George Lekakis is an advocate for ethnic, religious and multicultural communities at the local, state and national levels. Currently with the Department of Business and Innovation, he is a person who believes working on the ground with people is a challenging yet inspiring process to meet the needs of the community and to bring about change. With a background in psychology and community development, Tasneem Chopra has been working as a cross-cultural consultant, specialising in promoting issues of social justice. As the chairperson of the Australian Muslim Women’s Centre for Human Rights, Tasneem has also been at the forefront of issues Muslim women face in Australia. As a mother of three, she also juggles her responsibilities with the Council and day-to-day parenting commitments with tremendous skill and determination. Nyadoul Nyuon, a former refugee, will also be speaking on the night. Since arriving in Australia in 2005, she has worked to increase awareness of issues affecting the lives of African Australian youth. Currently studying law at the University of Melbourne, Nyadoul has worked with many charity and air organisations.
